Egypt’s children urgently need safe water in their homes

One child commented: "I used to go to school only one day a week. The rest of the week, I spent my day on water trips to bring water for my siblings and the animals in the house."

Many children and their families in Egypt are deprived of safe drinking water in their homes. Please donate now to provide the most vulnerable households with access to clean water.

HELP DELIVER SAFE WATER TO CHILDREN IN EGYPT

Since 12-year-old Mohammed was born, not one house in his village has had safe drinking water.

The eldest of six siblings, Mohammed would have to take a daily three-kilometre journey to fetch drinking water from other villages. Many parts of Egypt lack water at home due to costly installations that families can’t afford.

"Our village has no water to drink. To get water, we used to ride a donkey to the west to find people with taps,” Mohammed says.

"Some people didn’t agree to give us water. They shouted, saying, ‘This water is for money. You pay, you drink.’"

Everything changed last year when a UNICEF-supported program brought water to Mohammed's home—one of 550 water and 400 sewage connections installed in Egypt’s Sohag Governorate.

"We didn't expect that we will have taps to drink from in our house. I thought I was going to spend my whole life on the water journey,” he said.

Many of his friends still endure the daily struggle for water.

Mohammed dreams of a world where every child has access to safe water.

"The most important thing in the world is a sip of water."

Mohammed's struggle is shared by 12.5 million people in Egypt lacking safe water and proper sanitation. Each day, children face the threat of disease, significantly impacting children’s health and nutrition, and barriers to education, hindering their potential.

With water now at home, Mohammed can finally focus on school and his future. But countless other children still need our help.
