At just four years old, Mădălina lost her father. He was taken away from the family, and her mother, overwhelmed by hardship and grief, was left alone with three daughters in a house weakened by floods.
In a normal world, being a child means dreaming. Learning poems, drawing, and holding your mother’s hand tightly when you’re scared. But in her world, Mădălina learned far too early that sometimes children become the ones who give courage.
To her sisters. To her mother who, one evening, was overcome by sorrow.
“Mommy, if you're gone, who are we left with?”, Mădălina, six years old
A sentence spoken with tears in her eyes—one that stopped everything. That’s when her mother gathered her strength and decided she had to be strong.
But one day, someone knocked on the door. It was a social worker, who came with patience, a willingness to listen, and a desire to help.
“I connected with that woman as if she were my own mother,” Mădălina’s mother recalls.
That visit marked the beginning of change.
Little by little, they began to feel they were no longer alone.
A social worker present in the community means access to services, to counselling, to benefits, to safety. It means a person who knocks on the door when no one else does.
