A mother's struggle for survival
When fighting reached her village in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Mamy gathered her four children and fled south, desperately seeking safety. Arriving at a displaced persons site near Goma, she had to struggle to find food, walking around looking for vegetables. A UNICEF-supported community engagement team found her children severely malnourished and provided them with nutritious food and soap to limit exposure to cholera.
“To find food, you have to walk around looking for vegetables, otherwise you won't eat.”
The crisis: hunger and malnutrition in vulnerable regions across Africa
Imagine this struggle multiplied across millions of children in regions like Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya. These children face relentless hunger, displacement, and the threat of disease every day. In these areas, severe acute malnutrition is rampant, leading to higher risks of death and stunting in children. The recent heavy rains in some regions have only added to their woes, causing flash floods that further displace families and destroy essential resources like crops and livestock.
Children fighting malnutrition are enduring unimaginable hardships. They are starving, their bodies weakened by the lack of food, and their futures are at risk. They need urgent help to survive and thrive.
