The Devastating Impact of Floods
Catastrophic floods are among the most devastating natural disasters, often striking without warning and causing widespread destruction.
As waters rise, homes, schools, livestock, and critical infrastructure like water sources are damaged or destroyed, making it difficult for children and families to access safe drinking water.
In these crises, children are the most vulnerable.
Floods disrupt their lives in profound ways: crops and livelihoods are devastated, leaving children without food and prone to malnutrition; stagnant waters breed diseases like cholera and dengue; and damaged schools hinder their education and future prospects.
The recent floods in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have highlighted the urgent need for immediate and long-term support to help children recover and heal.
Floods like these are becoming more frequent and severe, and we need your support to continue to help children when they need us most. With your support, UNICEF can deliver life-saving relief and stay to provide long-term support to children affected by catastrophic flooding.
“We lost everything. It is all destroyed. We’ve barely been able to save anything from our home,” Hassan says. “I now have nightmares every night and am really scared.”
Hassan’s Story
In northern Afghanistan, 12-year-old Hassan’s home was destroyed when flash flooding ravaged his village. The waters swept away livestock, shut down schools and damaged health centres, leaving a trail of devastation.
UNICEF is helping children like Hassan by providing essential supplies and support including children’s clothes, hygiene supplies, safe drinking water, and health and nutrition support to screen and treat for malnutrition. But we need your support to reach more children affected by such devastating floods.
Protect children from hunger, disease and destruction
When severe flooding puts vulnerable children and families at risk, UNICEF helps to provide immediate relief and stays to help provide long-term support to affected communities.
UNICEF’s supply operation, which includes the largest humanitarian supply warehouse in the world, enables the delivery of life-saving supplies anywhere in the world within 48 to 72 hours.
With support from people like you, UNICEF helps provide:
Life-saving supplies
Essential supplies like hygiene kits are distributed to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, medical supplies are delivered to treat the wounded and therapeutic food is used to help fight malnutrition.
Safe drinking water
UNICEF delivers water treatment kits and helps set up emergency water points and water trucking facilities for families to access clean water.
Temporary shelters
UNICEF delivers temporary shelters and create child-friendly spaces for displaced children to learn, play and receive psychosocial support.
Help communities build back better
Floods not only destroy homes and schools but affect vulnerable children and their families for years to come. The disruption to everyday life makes it challenging for children to feel safe and hopeful about the future.
Which is why, support for long-term recovery is even more crucial. With your monthly support, you can help provide the resources these children and their communities need to rebuild and thrive.
You can help UNICEF provide long-term relief to children by:
