What happened in Nepal?
Severe flooding across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts has affected an estimated 50,000 people, including 17,000 children.
Homes have been swept away, families displaced and roads, bridges, health facilities, schools and water systems severely damaged. Some affected areas remain difficult to reach, and assessments of the damage and children’s needs are continuing.
UNICEF is scaling up its response with the Government of Nepal and humanitarian partners. Immediate support is underway for 1,000 households, with hygiene kits, buckets and water purifiers.
UNICEF is also preparing to dispatch medical tents, newborn kits and other essential health supplies.

Recovery takes time
Previous floods in Nepal show why children need support long after the immediate danger has passed.
In September 2024, heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding and landslides across Nepal. Homes, schools, clinics and water and sanitation facilities were damaged or destroyed.
In Panauti, UNICEF worked with the government and partners to establish a child-friendly space where children could play, learn and receive psychosocial support.
Children and families also received winter clothes, stationery and other learning materials. UNICEF provided affected communities with health and hygiene supplies and helped restore access to safe water and sanitation.
Recovery takes time, and children may need different kinds of support along the way. Depending on the emergency, that could mean restoring essential services, helping children return to learning or providing a safe place to play and recover.
