Nicolas, a serene child with a heart of gold, has only one dream: to be able to say the word “mum”.
Born prematurely, at 5 months of pregnancy, doctors gave him little chance of survival. Frail as he was, he was brought into his parents' home in a shoebox. And since then, with his family’s support, Nicolas has fought continuously to grow and develop like any other child his age.
But Nicolas' reality is not simple. He suffers from growth disorders that prevent him from speaking.
“They directed me to go to a doctor, to have a medical check up, saying the child is not well, because I said that he didn’t speak”, shares his mother, Mihaela.
Under the guidance of social workers in their community, Nicolas' mother was able to learn about services that her child can benefit from, such as counseling sessions and medical services, which play a key role in Nicolas' development. With the help of these services, Nicolas is one step closer to achieving his dream and calling Mihaela the magic word: "mother".
UNICEF is working to ensure that Nicolas and other children like him, along with their families, receive support from social workers to get access to quality services such as speech therapy, kinesitherapy, medical care, which are essential for children with special needs.
