When hope defeats diagnosis

Ionuț is six years old and lives in the village of Lunca, Tulcea County. From the very first moments of his life, he learned what it means to fight.

He was born prematurely, at only 25 weeks and weighing 700 grams. Doctors gave him a few hours to live. But hours turned into days, and days turned into years.

Ionuț lives with serious diagnoses: spastic tetraparesis and cerebral palsy. He has a cochlear implant, which has given him back the chance to hear. After many medical interventions, operations and therapies, he began to utter a few syllables, and each new gesture is a victory for Ionuț and his family.

Twice a week he goes to kindergarten, where he learns to be with other children. Three times a week, he commutes to Constanța for speech therapy and physical therapy, because there is no paediatrician, speech therapist or rehabilitation centre in his village. He is always accompanied by his grandmother Stoiana, who is also his personal assistant.

Ionuț will need another operation, therapy and medical interventions. The road is long and difficult for vulnerable children like Ionuț.

However, the family is not alone. Social workers have been there for Ionuț and his family, helping them to obtain the disability certificate and guiding them to access the services they need. With every bit of help he receives, Ionuț's life becomes a little easier.

For Ionuț and other vulnerable children, the support of a social worker means access to medical, social and educational services. It means the chance for a better life.

Vulnerable children’s lives can be improved with your constant support. By donating, you become an active part of the solution and of the change process.

The money raised is used where it is needed for vulnerable children. For example, to provide free access to specialized services for vulnerable children in Romania or offer a rapid and effective response to children affected by wars and natural disasters.

UNICEF asks for monthly contributions to help us provide sustainable long-term solutions to help children around the world.

A monthly gift is a recurring gift amount that you choose to send each month, and it is even more impactful because you're helping children every single day.

Your monthly gift will also enable us to plan effectively in our upcoming work, reduce costs and most importantly, reach even more children in need. The support and generosity of monthly donors contribute significantly to UNICEF efforts to help vulnerable children.
