In Eastern and Southern Africa, children are particularly vulnerable during health emergencies. With your help, we can ensure they receive the support they need to survive and thrive. Children face significant challenges, but thanks to people like you, there is hope.
Over 60% of the world's children and adolescents living with HIV are in this region. The numbers are staggering. In 2018 an estimated 1.8 million children and adolescents aged 0-19 years, in Eastern and Southern Africa were living with HIV. Approximately 65,000 of the region’s children and adolescents died of an AIDS-related cause in the same year.
Your donation can help provide life-saving treatment, prevent new infections, and offer care to those in need. With your help, we can prevent the spread of disease, protect vulnerable children, and give every child the opportunity to thrive.
You have the power to make a real difference. By supporting UNICEF’s public health efforts, you’re not only saving lives today, but you’re also building a brighter, healthier future for children across Eastern and Southern Africa.

UNICEF is responding to the HIV epidemic, together with governments and partners, to achieve an AIDS-free generation

One of the biggest achievements in the fight against HIV has been the widespread success of preventing mother-to-child transmission. However, it’s still urgent to find children, adolescents, and pregnant women living with undiagnosed HIV or at risk of contracting it.
Keeping mothers, children, and teens on lifelong treatment is a major challenge, influenced by service availability, social factors, and behaviors.

UNICEF is helping partners integrate HIV testing and counseling into hospitals, nutrition centers, and reproductive health services. We also support innovative HIV testing methods like point-of-care technology, SMS printers, and family-centered testing.
UNICEF ensures that HIV services are youth-friendly, supporting innovative delivery models such as community outreach, integrated services, and technology-based education and follow-up.

To prevent new HIV infections, especially among adolescent girls, UNICEF strengthens HIV prevention programs by combining health education with sexual and reproductive services, including pregnancy prevention. We also promote targeted prevention approaches for pregnant adolescents and young women.
Through your generosity, you are helping create an AIDS-free generation. In collaboration with governments and partners, we are integrating HIV services into hospitals, nutrition centers, and community outreach programs, ensuring that every child receives the care they need. Donate today to be a part of this life-changing work!
Rising mpox cases: Urgent support needed to safeguard children
To date, mpox cases have been reported in five countries (Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa). The new mpox variant (clade Ib) has been identified in all affected countries except South Africa, raising concerns about its potential spread, particularly among young children.

Beyond the immediate health risks, mpox outbreaks pose secondary challenges for children and adolescents, including stigma, discrimination, and disruptions to education. For women and girls, the risk of gender-based violence, including sexual abuse and exploitation, remains high, as they often shoulder the responsibility of caring for sick family members and meeting basic survival needs—similar to previous public health crises.
UNICEF, in collaboration with WHO, Africa CDC, and local partners, is responding to the mpox outbreak as part of government-led efforts across Eastern and Southern Africa.
In addition to the mpox outbreak, Kenya, Burundi, and Uganda are also facing multiple emergencies, including droughts and floods.
Based on lessons from the HIV, COVID-19, and Ebola public health emergency responses, it's crucial to work together to support survivors, fight stigma, and ensure basic social services continue - especially education and reintegration for children.
Your donation, no matter the amount, can make a lasting impact on the lives of children in Eastern and Southern Africa. Together, we can bring hope and create a healthier, brighter future for every child in the region.
