Insufficient access to quality primary healthcare and lack of knowledge and skills in nurturing children at home put vulnerable children at risk every day. 1 in 25 children in South Africa dies before their 5th birthday, a figure that has increased since COVID-19, reversing nearly a decade of progress. Many deaths are due to preventable causes like pneumonia and diarrhoea, with underlying factors such as malnutrition.
