The Challenge: Climate shocks, conflict, and economic strain have created unprecedented humanitarian needs across 21 countries. 4.2 million children under five are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, while one in three children—25 million—are living in severe child food poverty. In South Sudan, a US$96 million funding shortfall forced 185 nutrition sites to close, placing 700,000 children at immediate risk. Across the region, all 21 countries are facing public health emergencies caused by cholera resurgence, outbreaks of mpox, Ebola, Marburg, and vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and polio.
The Solution: Your donation directly fuels UNICEF’s scaled, proven response. We prioritise the most vulnerable children by delivering therapeutic food, measles vaccines, safe water, and critical protection services. Despite severe funding gaps, UNICEF’s commitment remains unwavering. We continue to adapt by strengthening local partnerships, expanding community outreach, and focusing relentlessly on impact—but we cannot do it alone.
Your support is critical to prevent hard-won gains for children from being reversed.
Donate today to keep lifesaving programmes running for children who need help now.

How Your Donation Saves Lives
UNICEF is 100% donor funded. Your contribution is directly scaled into proven, efficient programmes across the region. Even in a constrained environment, we prioritize the most vulnerable children—delivering essential services that protect their health, dignity, and future.
- Nutrition: Treating severe acute malnutrition with ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF). In 2025, nearly 900,000 children received treatment for severe wasting.
- Health: Vaccinating children against deadly diseases like measles—12 million children protected in 2025.
- Water & Sanitation: Providing safe water to prevent disease. UNICEF reached approximately 4.4 million people with safe water access.
- Protection: Running programmes for children at risk of violence, exploitation, and abuse—many now at severe risk of closure due to funding gaps.
- Community Prevention: Strengthening local health systems and expanding community-based outreach to stop crises before they escalate.
“If we do not prioritize funding, hard-won gains in child survival, education and health risk being reversed.”
– Etleva Kadilli, UNICEF Regional Director
A Critical Moment For Children
UNICEF urgently needs US$1 billion to reach 16 million children across Eastern and Southern Africa in 2026.
The funding shortfall is already having severe consequences: critical services are being suspended where needs are greatest. Ethiopia faces a US$376M shortfall, Somalia US$134M, and South Sudan US$96M—leaving millions of children at immediate risk.
