Children face education and humanitarian crises
Today millions of children are in need of vital support to ensure they can achieve their basic right to a quality education and to be protected from emergencies around the world.
UNICEF’s State of Global Learning Poverty 2022 update estimates that in 2022, 70 per cent of the world’s 10-year-olds lacked basic literacy skills. Limited access to the internet and digital devices, especially for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, an issue exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has widened inequalities and the digital divide.
Alongside this, right now a record 235 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance and 36.5 million children have been displaced from their homes due to emergencies. The scale of the crisis is staggering. During emergencies, it is often children and young people who are most vulnerable and hardest hit, and children affected by conflict and disaster are more likely to be out of school, missing critical stages of their education.

Together we can transform lives
Over the next three years, the Formula 1 partnership could help an estimated 6.5 million of the world’s most vulnerable children access quality education. This involves improving access to learning for marginalised children, and increasing skills in key areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths education (STEM). As a sport reliant on STEM skills, Formula 1 recognises the importance of investing in education to enable children and young people to realise their potential and succeed in the workplace.

By supporting the expansion of UNICEF’s Learning Passport – a portable digital platform that enables children to continue learning online and offline, UNICEF will improve digital access to education globally. The Learning Passport is currently operational in 26 countries. Formula 1’s support will help UNICEF expand the programme to an additional 19 countries and enable the launch of an offline version for children in Mexico and Brazil.
Formula 1 will also support UNICEF’s work for children in emergencies, enabling UNICEF to provide temporary learning places for children in emergencies as well as protect their health and safety during conflict and disasters. This vital work will also support often forgotten or underfunded humanitarian crises as well as help children and their communities protect, manage and reduce disaster risk.
