Assam floods have threatened the lives of millions of children and families

UNICEF is working with the government and partners to help provide essentials and support to people who have been displaced and affected by the floods.

Assam

Other field activities supported by UNICEF: 

  • Supported Government to come up with COVID-19 sensitive relief camp management Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) which also includes provisions for Child Friendly Spaces in 141 flood relief camps across Assam. These spaces keep children engaged in various learning and recreational activities. 
     
  • Used digital means to train frontline workforce of the government on managing flood response with specific focus on women and child friendly relief camp management. 468 officials of Social Welfare (Integrated Child Development Services), over 700 officials and frontline workers/volunteers of Public Health Engineering Department, Senior district officials of Education department were given orientation on COVID-sensitive flood response through webinars.
     
  • Supported Assam State Disaster Management Authority in mobilizing and training to a cadre of 14000 volunteers for non-medical response support to COVID-19 which was also extended to flood response.
     
  • To reach out with information, UNICEF with partners started operating mobile awareness vans for spreading awareness on COVID and flood through loudspeaker announcements, mobile video screening and COVID sensitive community engagement activities.
