What is happening to children’s education today?
Every child has the right to learn. Yet conflict, climate-related disasters, poverty and exclusion continue to disrupt education for millions of children around the world. Today:
- 234 million crisis-affected children need urgent support to access quality education
- At least 242 million students had their schooling disrupted by climate-related hazards in 2024 alone
For children affected by crisis, education is more than learning. It provides stability, protection and hope during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. When education is interrupted, children face a greater risk of falling behind, dropping out of school and missing opportunities that shape their future.
Why this matters
School helps children develop the knowledge and skills they need for the future. It can also provide a sense of routine, safety and belonging when their lives have been disrupted by conflict, disasters or displacement. UNICEF works to ensure that children can continue learning, no matter the challenges they face.
What is UNICEF doing to support children’s education?
With donor support, UNICEF helps children continue learning in the most challenging situations, from conflict zones to climate-affected communities. UNICEF works with governments and partners to:
- Restore access to education during emergencies
- Support learning continuity when schools are disrupted
- Reach the most vulnerable children, including children with disabilities
