Myanmar Earthquake Deepens Crisis for Children Amid Conflict and Climate Shocks

Myanmar's children still grappling with impact of devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake

A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on 28 March — the deadliest in decades. It has killed over 3,700 people and left nearly 2 million children in urgent need of help.

What is happening in Myanmar?

A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on 28 March 2025 — the deadliest in the country’s recent history. It killed over 3,700 people, injured more than 5,100, and left nearly 2 million children in urgent need of help.

Children are bearing the heaviest burden.

The earthquake compounded years of conflict, poverty, and displacement — and has pushed already vulnerable families beyond the edge. Many children are still without safe shelter, clean water, or access to education.

The monsoon season has made everything worse.

Floods are damaging fragile shelters, contaminating water sources, and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks in overcrowded displacement sites.

Mental health needs are also rising with nearly 40% of young people surveyed identified mental health as their top unmet need.

UNICEF is on the ground delivering urgent aid — safe water, hygiene kits, education supplies, cash assistance, and psychosocial support. But the scale of the crisis remains immense, and more help is urgently needed.
