"The news confirms some of our worst fears that famine is occurring in parts of Sudan and is inflicting unimaginable suffering on children and families who are already reeling from the impact of a horrific war,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. 

The announcement of famine is a rare and alarming event, signaling that the situation has reached a critical and life-threatening point. For the children of Sudan, this means that every day without aid is a day where lives are lost. Severe acute malnutrition is rampant, and without immediate intervention, many more children will succumb to hunger and disease.

This crisis is not confined to North Darfur. Other parts of Sudan are also at risk if we do not act now. The time to help is now before the dire situation spreads further.
