Eleven years into the conflict, economic downturn, and displacement have left hundreds of thousands of families struggling to survive in Syria. Now, the impact of such a devastating earthquake makes the situation even more desperate. We cannot wait – please donate to help us save lives.
Your donation can make a huge difference. Please help now!
“The initial earthquake happened so early in the morning, when many children were fast asleep, made it even more dangerous, and the aftershocks bring continuing risks.” - Catherine Russell, Executive Director, UNICEF
Thousands of homes are likely to have been destroyed, displacing families and exposing them to the elements at a time of year when temperatures regularly drop below freezing and snow and freezing rain are common. UNICEF needs your help to protect children from the cold, keep them warm in their places of learning and to offer a glimmer of hope. We can’t afford to wait, and we urgently need your support to reach children. Please make an urgent donation today.
What UNICEF is doing to help
Every minute counts. UNICEF is on the ground assessing the needs of children and families affected by the devastating consequences of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Syria-Turkiye border early morning on 6th February 2023.
We are still assessing the full extent of the devastation, but we already fear that hundreds of people have been killed, including many women and children. Many more have been injured and many homes damaged or destroyed. These people have nowhere to go and the freezing winter temperatures pose an additional challenge to their survival.
As reports trickle in, we fear that children are the most vulnerable and that many lives are at risk.
Children who are now in immediate danger of being hurt or killed in the oncoming aftershocks and collapse of infrastructures need urgent shelter, safe drinking water, and hygiene essentials.
