7.5 million children in Ukraine are in danger!

The lives of millions of children from Ukraine are in danger. The use of heavy weapons has damaged critical water infrastructure and schools. Unless the fighting subsides, tens of thousands of families could be forcibly displaced, dramatically escalating humanitarian needs.

Children need to play and be children. Children need their families to be alive. Children need to dream and the help of adults for them to achieve their true potential and fulfill their dreams.

“When the war affects children’s lives, it’s awful. After all, everyone grows up with dreams. And the war takes them away and destroys the future. Children should not be victims of conflict” - Natalka, 16

Romania started to receive refugees as early as Thursday 24, 2022. Up to now, over 3 million Ukrainians have arrived in Romania, out of which approximately 97,592 were still in the country.

UNICEF in Romania offers support with the help of ”Blue Dot” centers, specially created for refugee children and their families. At present, there are operational support and Blue Dot-type centers in Sighetu Marmației, Siret, Iasi, Albita-Husi, Galati, Isaccea, Brașov și București. "Blue Dot" are children friendly spaces, designed for refugee children and their families, which will provide the following integrated services:

  • child-friendly spaces, offering integrated services with a focus on the most vulnerable, on family reunification, restoring family links, information, and advice desks.

  • dedicated mother and baby/toddler spaces, psychosocial, hygiene, health, and nutrition first aid.

  •  basic legal counseling, and referral services for cases of violence or health conditions.

  • blankets, warm clothing, health, and recreational kits along with hygiene products and baby food will be available in Blue Dots as well.

Until February 2023, over 350,000 women and children had access to support services in the Blue Dots operational in Romania, and other initiatives.

UNICEF has mobilized urgently and is working across Eastern Ukraine to scale up life-saving programs for children, through: trucking safe water to conflict-affected areas; prepositioning health, hygiene, and emergency education supplies as close as possible to communities near the line of contact; working with municipalities to ensure there is immediate help for children and families in need; psychosocial care to children traumatized by the chronic insecurity, provided also by UNICEF-supported mobile teams.
