School is the primary place where they access effective nutrition and health interventions like vaccinations. It also provides immediate safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, crucial for survival.

UNICEF is working with the Government of Liberia and partners through the 'Back-To-My-Classroom campaign' and the “Support A Child, Secure the Future” project to bring out-of-school children back into classrooms and safe spaces. These are powerful steps, but the need is still immense.

For every child learning inside this classroom, an alarming 36% of their peers are left outside the school gate, denied their chance at a safe, successful start in life. Addressing this crisis demands that we support the national drive to transform the quality of learning.
17% of children across Liberia are desperately surviving on the streets, completely excluded from learning. For those much-more fortunate students who are enrolled, the pursuit of education is undermined by poor school proximity and a lack of educational facilities, systemic barriers cited by parents for low enrolment, high dropout rates, and children starting school late.
Foundational literacy and numeracy are essential skills required to succeed. This essential skill set is the foundation upon which we build not just an education, but a child's security and lifelong potential.

- Educational kits: Equipping out-of-school children with textbooks, pencils, notebooks, and uniforms, giving them the dignity and tools required to succeed in the classroom.

- WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene): Equipping schools with safe drinking water, handwashing stations and gender-separated sanitation facilities so children can learn in dignity, stay protected from disease and are less likely to miss school.
- Protection services: Making schools safer by setting up child-friendly protection services, training teachers to recognise and respond to signs of violence or abuse and linking children to specialised support when they need it.
