More than 2.3 million children in Yemen are suffering from acute malnutrition. Ghosson is one of the lucky children who have been treated and recovered from severe acute malnutrition. Although life is still not easy, she and her family have hope for a better future. Help Yemen’s children survive.

How will my donation help children in Yemen?

UNICEF is working to provide immediate treatment, food, malnutrition screening, and cash assistance to the most vulnerable children and their families. Your donation will help provide immediate assistance for children like Ghosson across the country.

(1) UNICEF-supported treatment and clinics

Millions of children in Yemen have been diagnosed with malnutrition, and in 2021 UNICEF has helped to screen more than 6.8 million children under age five. Treatments are carried out in UNICEF-supported clinics, seeking to support the most vulnerable children to enhance their chance of survival.

Ghosson was suffering from fever, diarrhea, chest infections, and weighed only 5kgs when she was admitted for treatment at the Al Sadaqa Hospital in Aden. Another 270,000 children like her have been submitted to outpatient treatment programs across the country.

UNICEF also supports 34 therapeutic feeding centers, treating thousands of children who need more intensive treatment if they hope to survive.

(2) Cash-based assistance for families

Ghosson’s father, Ibrahim, was heartbroken when he could not afford to treat his daughter. Neighbors helped to sometime pay for water and necessities as he was unable to find work at the camp. But many other children are facing similar conditions. More than half of the poorest households in Yemen are in debt, with most loans going to basic survival and to buy food. Cash-based assistance programs set up by UNICEF can provide critical support for children. Over 80% of families in Yemen are in poverty,

(3) Life-saving therapeutic food

High nutrient food packets, called Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) are used by UNICEF to provide life-saving nutrition for children suffering from malnutrition.
