Why menstrual hygiene management is important?
Lack of adequate facilities and awareness causes stress in adolescent girls.
Many adolescent girls drop out of school and their attendance rate decreases. Their education is hindered.
Myths and taboos within communities make it difficult for girls to share their feelings, concerns, or doubts. This, in turn, affects their self-esteem.
UNICEF is helping and assisting in the following activities in schools -
Pad vending machines
Installation of pad vending machines in schools for the provision of hygienic menstrual absorbents and to make the menstruation experience in schools comfortable and safe.
Pad incinerators
Installation of pad incinerators in schools for the collection and disposal of used sanitary pads in a hygienic manner.
Open discussions
Training of school teachers to undertake regular open discussions with girls about periods and menstrual hygiene. This safe space allows girls to feel comfortable and discuss any body-related queries.
Separate toilets for boys and girls
Construction of separate toilets for boys and girls that are well maintained and hygienic with spaces for girls to change pads without any shame or difficulty.
Well-equipped toilets
Inclusion of elbow tap handwashing station, hooks for girls to hang clothes, mirrors, sanitary pad incinerators, and improved ventilation.
