Before COVID-19, 66% of children eligible for early childhood development (ECD) programmes did not have access to them.
Over the last 8 months, these children have been further compromised and are at risk of being left behind.
As you know, the school closures in 2020 have severely impacted South African children's basic right to education:
- Many children have been left behind in their required academic progress.
- Access to online lessons and adult support has not even been an option for many children.
COVID-19 restrictions have exposed systemic problems across the education landscape, which further compromise the long term future of our country.
Access to a quality education should be universal. This has been discussed in homes and boardrooms across the world and yet, despite progress, there is still quite a way to go for children in SA. With limited access to the internet and quality learning materials, school closures have hit the most vulnerable children hardest.
Every child deserves access to quality education. Your donation can help make this a reality. UNICEF SA is committed to the safe reopening of schools and giving every child equal access to the classroom and an opportunity to learn and reimagine a better future.
#WRITE4CHANGE - Words matter
Words - written or spoken - have the power to motivate, persuade, break down or build up. Words offer promise and connection - taking us on adventures, helping us cross thresholds, and inviting us to break down barriers.
Words can make heroes.
With #WRITE4CHANGE, children in South Africa get to use their voices, and through a short poem, share what they believe is a better future for all.
Have you ever wondered how the children in your life dream about a better future for all? We encourage you to have a conversation with them and ask them to write their thoughts down in a poem titled: ‘Imagine a Better World’
#WRITE4CHANGE gives children a voice to play a role in taking our country forward. UNICEF SA will select 12 of the poems submitted through #WRITE4CHANGE and feature them in our 2021 calendar which will be sent to every donor from this campaign.
Donate and receive a UNICEF SA #WRITE4CHANGE 2021 calendar containing the 12 most inspirational poems submitted by SA’s future influencers.
Keep all South African children learning and enquiring, and use your UNICEF SA 2021 calendar as a daily reminder of the difference your donations are making in the lives of others.
